10 months of doodles on a desk top calendar
Like many artists I have had other work. At the time I was working with women and children. There were parts of my day when I would be on a phone call and my team mate had given me a desk top calendar. Well, being a life long doodler I could not resist doodling on that calendar on the first day of June!
As I have done often in my creative life I decided that I would draw each day till the end of the year. I would set a theme and in the case of the one that you see here, my theme was to draw any creature that I saw that day.
There were two days that i did not see a single creature, thus on June 6th I painted an aardvark (though I have never seen one in person I find them very interesting and cute actually).I may not feel that way if I encounter one in the wilds but here in this little square he seems very approachable. What looks like his suit of armour for me represents the necessity of having a tough skin sometimes. On June 31th I was once again not able to spot a creature but thankfully my adult son stopped by and I asked him to put an animal in the final square which he did. He is born in the year of the Dragon and it felt like a perfect ending to have my son put his dragon mark to close this month. I went on to paint and draw in those little squares till the end of the year thus creating 10 months of doodles.
Several years later I decided to have these calendar pages reproduced. I would then cut and paste them onto archival cards and finish each one with a gold leaf border around the doodle.
In essence each one of these cards is handmade.
Thank you for reading my story.
